Athens City Guide with Ileana Makri
WHAT TO DO IN… ATHENS
3,000 years ago, the world was a very different place. Even one year ago we couldn’t fathom the changes we’re experiencing now, but three millennia in the past is almost as difficult to wrap your head around. But one thing was still there, one point to focus on, Athens. The Grecian capital laid the foundations for the western world and has carried its long history of unique, museum-worthy jewelry into the present as it is home to designer Ileana Makri; who keeps her studio nestled in Athens’ historic city center. “The area is a trendy cultural center buzzing with merchants, restaurants, cafes, live music and art exhibitions and every street and corner takes you back in history.” So, the real question: where does an Athenian local go when she’s free to explore the city? Ileana spills all the secrets…

Athenian style is…
Greek chic is most certainly a thing. In the winter, it still gets cold so comfortable layers are a must for exploring the Acropolis and taking in the museums — simplicity is key, just ask Ileana: “Most of my clothes in the winter are monochromatic, but in the summer I mostly wear color and prints around the islands.” When the temperature goes up the sandals come out and flowing, wafty styles that dance in the coastal breeze become your uniform.

Kostarelos Deli, Kolonaki
“It’s a delicious bakery and delicatessen with fine cheeses and dairy where you can enjoy delicious coffee, salads and sandwiches.”

Hammam Baths, Thissio
“The Hammam is great for a modern day take on the Turkish bath experience that will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.”

Monastiraki Flea Market
“Definitely worth visiting and the area around the flea market is buzzing with vintage stores.”
The Athens Look
When dressing for sightseeing, take Ileana’s advice: “Athens is great for walking around so pack comfortable shoes. If visiting during summer make sure you wear a hat and bring a light sweater for the evenings.” And you certainly wouldn’t want to forget light linen dresses and tops and flowing palazzo pants for more relaxed days and evenings out in the city center.
